Do you own a Sheltie that has been diagnosed with kidney disease or is related to one with kidney disease? The American Shetland Sheepdog Association (ASSA) and its charitable Foundation are sponsoring a study that might help determine if there is a higher occurrence of a certain type of kidney disease in Shetland sheepdogs. The research will be conducted by Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine.
According to the study page, purebred Shetland sheepdogs that have been diagnosed with kidney disease or are related to one with kidney disease can participate. Texas A&M is also accepting historical data from purebred Shelties who were diagnosed with kidney disease but have since passed away. Participation could ultimately lead to a genetic test for the disease.
